Y'all, we need to talk about what the actual hell is happening in the job market right now. And I mean REALLY talk about it.

Coming back from maternity leave (after a pregnancy that forced me to disconnect for a bit), I stepped into what feels like the twilight zone. The most common thing I'm hearing? "Robin, what happened? Not too long ago recruiters were falling over themselves to hire developers, and now we can't even get them to look at our applications!"

The shift is jarring. We've gone from recruiters literally begging developers to talk to them, to developers struggling to get a single response. It's like someone flipped a switch, and suddenly the game changed entirely. There is an incredible burden on the job seeker to get noticed. This means that before you’re having to convince a company you’re the right person to hire…you have to convince them you’re worth interviewing in the first place! It’s exhausting.

Let me break down what I'm seeing after spending the last month diving deep into this chaos:

  • First off - LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" has turned into a NIGHTMARE. They're trying to boost their numbers, which means everyone and their mom is applying to EVERYTHING with zero effort. Recruiters are drowning in applications. You know what candidates do when they don't hear back? They apply to EVEN MORE jobs with EVEN LESS attention to detail. It's a vicious cycle, folks.

  • And don't even get me started on the AI situation. Look, I'm ALL FOR using AI strategically (hell yeah, use those tools!), but when everyone's using it to create the same generic content with rocket emojis...You're not standing out, you're drowning in the noise.

  • Here's where it gets really interesting…and concerning. This chaos goes deeper than most folks realize. The new administration's changes are creating ripple effects throughout the entire market. Not only are companies holding some hiring decisions to wait and see how the market is going to react, I've connected with developers who were working on federal contracts that suddenly got cut. And regardless of where you stand politically (NOT here to debate DOGE or policy), this is affecting real people's livelihoods. Oh, and now you add in these tariffs and the uncertainty there? Companies are about to hesitate even more before hiring.

Take Control of What You Can

Instead of throwing applications into the void, here's what actually works:

  1. Break it down into bite-sized pieces. Research a couple of companies each day that you ACTUALLY want to work for. Don't overwhelm yourself trying to apply to everything that moves.

  2. It's better to have ONE good conversation with someone in your network than to easy-apply to 100 roles you'll never hear back on. Being busy doesn't equal results.

  3. When a recruiter reaches out to you about a legitimate job, RESPOND! Even when it isn’t the right fit. Clarify what you ARE looking for so they know what to look out for. Have it copy/pasted in a note on your phone so you’re not wasting time writing the same thing over and over again.

  4. When you see a job posting, don't just apply and cross your fingers. Follow the steps from our Black Hole of Applications post (https://therogue.beehiiv.com/p/the-rogue) to stand out and connect with the right people.

  5. Use that job tracker I shared when you subscribe. Control your search and have the right type of activity. Just like in recruitment: activity for the sake of activity might make you feel busy, but it doesn't actually move the needle.

Let's Get Real About The Emotional Toll

I know it's incredibly disheartening to pour your worth into applications only to be met with silence. I'm hearing from candidates who are discouraged, hurt, and straight-up scared. When you've spent years honing your skills, and suddenly can't even get a conversation started? That hurts.

But here's what I want you to remember: The system is broken, not you.

When I started Rogue, I was TERRIFIED no one would want to work with me. But then I looked at my data: I had brought in 78% of the perm business the year before. If I could do that for someone else, I sure as hell could do it for myself.

That's what I want you to remember when you're feeling discouraged: Focus on your past accomplishments. Remind yourself why you're a badass.

I'm in your corner. I'm your cheerleader. And I want you to succeed.

Take what you can control, be at peace with the rest, and remember: you're not alone in this.
