From the outside looking in, recruiting seems simple. You find a candidate, make an intro, boom: done.
And honestly…yeah. It does look easy when you’ve been doing it for more than a decade.
But here’s the truth: The work that actually makes a recruiter good is painfully unsexy. It’s repetitive. It’s emotionally heavy. And 99% of it happens when no one is watching.
This industry chews people up even when the market is good. And if you’ve been paying attention, the market has not been good.
Still, Rogue is having our strongest quarter ever.
Not because of some hack. Not because we got “lucky.” Not because of a flashy brand campaign.
It’s because of consistency. And consistency is built in the boring stuff.
The Work People Don’t See (Because They Don’t Want To)
Here’s what actually fills your pipeline and builds your name over time:
Showing up for candidate conversations that go nowhere.
Answering the same question for the 47th time.
Calling someone to tell them their “dream job” isn’t happening.
Walking people through feedback you know is going to sting.
Following up again and again and again.
Sending updates to clients even when the update is literally: “No movement today.”
And trying your best to keep up with messages when it feels impossible.
And look, I’m not going to sit here and pretend I never drop the ball. Sometimes I do. There’s no world where one person can be perfect in this job.
But I circle back. That’s the difference.
Consistency isn’t about hitting 100%. It’s about returning, even when you’re tired.
The Candidate Story That Proves the Point
One of my candidates starts today.
We first spoke in 2019.
Six years ago, I had to tell him he didn’t get the role he was excited about.
It wasn’t a fun conversation. But I still showed up. I still communicated. I didn’t disappear. We connected on LinkedIn and went about our lives.
Fast forward six years: He sees a post from me. He reaches out. He’s a perfect fit. And now he’s starting his new job.
That’s not luck. That’s the payoff of not ghosting people when it's inconvenient.
Most recruiters never get moments like that because they don’t make it past month six.
The “First At-Bat Home Run” Conversation
A startup founder asked me recently if I’d consider a lower fee because I sent him a great candidate on the first try.
Fair question.
My answer? “Sure, but do you know how many hours of batting practice it took to hit that home run?”
That’s the thing about being good at this job. When you’ve been doing the reps for years, your work should look easy.
A Decade of Showing Up
There’s someone I’ve known for almost 10 years now. We’ve worked together when they were a hiring manager. We’ve worked together when they were a candidate. It’s been a longterm, respectful partnership.
That’s not a relationship built on one call or one placement or one lucky intro. That’s ten years of consistent communication, good work, honesty, and not burning bridges.
This is what I wish people understood about recruiting: Reputation isn’t built by going viral. Or being loud. Or being charming. Or using the newest AI tool. Or calling yourself a “headhunter” on LinkedIn.
It’s built in the small moments, repeated over and over again…especially when no one is watching.
Why Most Recruiters Don’t Last Right Now
Recruiting feels “easy” until you actually have to do it.
You’re delivering rejection all day. You’re managing expectations on both sides. You’re carrying people’s hopes and fears whether you want to or not. You’re trying to be objective when everyone else involved is emotional. You’re navigating a market that changes by the hour.
And right now? With budgets tight, roles on hold, and job seekers frustrated? This is the kind of market that exposes who was only here for the good times.
Recruiting is not glamorous. It’s not for people who want quick, shiny wins. It’s not for people who crumble the moment things feel heavy.
This job rewards the people who keep showing up when everything is hard.
The Takeaway
If there’s one thing I’ve learned since I was 21 and fell into this industry, it’s this:
Your reputation is built in the work no one applauds. Your success is built in the consistency no one sees. And your “wins” are usually the result of a thousand tiny reps that didn’t look like wins at all.
See you next Monday,
